*SEE OUR BLOG FOR THE STORY BEHIND THESE PHOTOS. CLICK BLOG AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE* A walk in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe can yield unbelievable experiences, like this encounter between a herd of buffalo and a pride of lion. About half of the photos were shot on foot, against a large mahogany tree. The other half were shot perched up IN the tree! Sometimes the photographer has to dodge the action not only to get the shot, but to stay alive! Behind it all, of course, is a good guide, and we had the best, a Zimbabwean named Andrew Smith (reachable at firstname.lastname@example.org). A narrative explaining this incredible scene can be found on our blog (click "Blog" at the top of this page, or go to http://mapphotog.blogspot.com). As you can tell from these photos, Mana Pools, an unfenced national park in Zimbabwe that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is extremely wild. To help keep it that way (mining interests threaten the park), 50% of the proceeds of any photos in this gallery will go to The Zambezi Society, a charity that supports the Zambezi Valley, which includes Mana Pools. In 1982, this volunteer organization successfully lobbied against the proposed Mupata Gorge dam site on the Zambezi River, which would have flooded what is now Mana Pools National Park, making the wildlife scenes in these photographs impossible. For more information, click "50% Charity Pledge at the top of this page, and thanks for helping Mana Pools!
